Scottish Writers' Centre presents the Glasgow launch of Causeway/Cabhsaiac on Thursday December 16 from 7-8.30pm @ the CCA Glasgow. The Scottish Writers' Centre launches the new magazine of Irish and Scottish Writing, in association with the University of Aberdeen. The evening also includes the Centre's mid-Winter celebration. With October coming to an end and November fast approaching, I thought that I would take the liberty of posting upcoming events in the month of November.

November 1- GWL Archives Workshops

November 1-3- 'Mara Menzies 'Legend of Magnificent Moon & Toto Tales'

November 1-29- Writing Glasgow, University of Glasgow Creative Writing Programme Exhibition

An FREE exhibition at The Mitchell celebrating the 15th anniversary of the University of Glasgow's Creative Writing Programme.

November 2- Canongate’s Irregular launch Alasdair Gray’s autobiography A Life in Pictures.

Doors open at 8pm Canongate’s Irregular will travel from its regular venue in Edinburgh to Oran Mor to celebrate the long-awaited publication of A Life in Pictures, the autobiography of author and artist Alasdair Gray. With Alasdair Gray, Liz Lochhead, Louise Welsh and music from Roddy Woomble, Lord Cut-Glass and My Latest Novel, this an event not to be missed!

October Events Update

Some more interesting lit events have come to my attention since my last post, details of which are below.

As I'm sure many of you are aware, Glasgay! 2010 is now upon us and has an array of fantastic events on offer. A few lit events in October which form part of the festival are:

1) 'Panic Patterns' is the first collaborative work by Louise Welsh and Zoe Strachan at the Citizens Theatre, from Oct. 19- Oct. 30. Described as, "an edgy compelling drama from award winning novelists," by the List, this is not to be missed. For those with a taste for foreign, specifically German Literature then this next event may be for you.

On Tuesday Oct. 26, there will be a Book Club meeting taking place at the Goethe Institute, Park Circus, Glasgow. German author, Christiane Roesinger will be reading and discussing her book 'Das Schoene Leben' from 6.30-8pm. Please note that the reading and discussion will be in German.

Here it is folks the October events for the next fortnight. What a busy schedule! You can go out every night to a bookish/lit event. Lots of famous authors are giving up their time for free events. The dark nights are slowing drawing in, so wrap up warm and go and enjoy a book launch or take part in open mic events. More upcoming events

A few more events have come to my attention since my last post. Glasgow is certainly one of the most culturally diverse cities in Scotland, which is evidenced by its inhabitants, who come from a variety of different backgrounds. As a result of this fact, it is hardly surprising that our city offers a number of events which cater to those with a taste for foreign literature. One such event is the launch of Scottish writer Allan Massie's most recent work, entitled 'KLAUS and Other Stories,' which takes place on Wednesday October 13 at the Goethe Institute in Glasgow. Massie's most recent work includes a novella about the life of the German author, Klaus Mann (the son of the German literary giant, Thomas Mann.) Massie has been hailed as, "...one of the best Scottish writers of his generation," by The Herald's Alan Taylor, and as a, "...master storyteller..." by Standpoint's editor, Daniel Johnson. So for those of you with an insatiable appetite for German literature, this may just be the event for you. Or even if you're simply curious to learn more about Klaus Mann, then why not attend, as admission is free for this event.

For all those who are fans of Iain M. Bank's writing, then make a note in your diaries that on Wednesday October 13 he will be at Waterstone's on Sauchiehall Street, where he will be reading extracts from his latest novel, 'Surface Detail.' The novel will be available for purchase, and the author will also be signing of copies of his books after the event. Please be aware that this event will be ticketed, so be sure to take note of the details below if you wish to attend.

Whether you consider yourself to be a fashionista, or simply have a passive interest in fashion, why not come along to learn about how to spot fashionable bargains, from Fashion guru, Lynn McCrossan. McCrossan is also a noted radio presenter and columnist, who will be discussing her latest book, 'A Girl's Guide to Vintage' at the Sauchiehall street branch of Waterstone's on Thursday October 14. This event will be ticketed, so please make a note of the details below if you plan on attending this event.

There is so much happening in Glasgow's arts community that it glows with literary events almost every day. We are so lucky to have access to such a rich variety of events. However, I often find that there is so much going on that we all need reminders and that there is no single place where all, or even the majority of the events taking place in Glasgow and the greater Glasgow area, are listed.So here's my proposal. I'll update this blog on a regular basis, listing all of the events that I am aware of in Glasgow. If you know of any others do FB me or email me and I can add them to my fortnighly list.


Strathkelvin Writers' Group meets every Tuesday at 7.30pm in the hall of St James the Less Episcopal Church, Hilton Road, Bishopbriggs.

National Poetry Day 7th October has events all over the city. The Federation of Writer's (Scotland) has a top event at GOMA don't miss it.Check out their website www.writersfederation.org.uk/
